Accessibility

We build this site to WCAG 2.1 Level AA. Here is what we have done, what we know is still incomplete, and how to reach a person if something here keeps you from the information you came for.

Our target

The standard we build to is the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA. That is the benchmark most commonly referenced in United States law and the one we hold this site to.

We are not claiming this site is flawless. Accessibility is something you maintain, not something you finish. What we can tell you is what we have built and checked, and what we know is still outstanding.

What we have done

  • Quick Exit from the keyboard. The Quick Exit control is a real link that keyboard and screen reader users can reach, and pressing Esc twice does the same thing from anywhere on the page.
  • Contrast. Every text and background pair on the site comes from a fixed palette, and each pair was measured against the WCAG ratios (4.5:1 for normal text, 3:1 for large text and for boundaries that carry meaning) before it was allowed into the design.
  • Tap targets. Buttons, navigation links and form controls are at least 44 by 44 pixels. Many people read this site on a phone, sometimes quickly and one-handed.
  • Keyboard navigation. Everything you can do with a mouse you can do with a keyboard: the menu, the screener, the form, every link. Focus indicators are visible, not suppressed.
  • Skip link. A "Skip to content" link comes early in the tab order on every page, so you are not walked through the whole menu each time.
  • Headings. One H1 per page, and headings below it nest in order. Headings describe the section, so heading-by-heading navigation in a screen reader gets you somewhere.
  • Images. Images that carry information have alt text that says what they show. Decorative images are marked so assistive technology skips them.
  • Motion. If your device is set to reduce motion, the site respects it. There are no carousels that move on their own, no countdown timers, and nothing that flashes.
  • No horizontal scrolling. Pages are checked at 390 pixels wide, a common phone width. Content reflows instead of forcing you to scroll sideways.
  • Tables. Wide tables scroll inside their own container, are reachable by keyboard, and keep real table headers so a screen reader can announce which column a cell belongs to.

What we know is not done

  • English only. The site is published in English, and it has no translation layer, because a translation service would load another company's scripts into the page. If you read another language more easily, call us and we will explain any page in English, Russian, Spanish or Uzbek, or through a live interpreter.
  • No independent audit yet. We test the site ourselves against the points above. It has not yet been audited by an outside accessibility reviewer.

We will update this section as each item closes, rather than removing it quietly.

Tell us about a barrier

If something on this site blocked you, we want to know

Call (718) 484-7510, or email info@usherlegal.com with "Accessibility" in the subject line. You can also write to Usher Law Group, P.C., 1600 Sheepshead Bay Rd, Suite 203, Brooklyn, NY 11235.

It helps if you can tell us the page you were on, what you were trying to do, and what device, browser or assistive technology you were using. If you cannot describe it in those terms, tell us in your own words. That is enough.

What we will do about it

We aim to acknowledge an accessibility report within two business days and to tell you what we found and when we can fix it. In the meantime we will get you the information by another route: by phone, by email, or in a different format, whichever is safe for you.

You never have to use this website to become a client or to get an answer. Everything here is also available by calling (718) 484-7510 and talking to a person.
